Tips to become better biker in Nepali roads

Motor biking in Nepal is extremely fun. The terrain here offers a rider fantastic view a chance to explore the dynamics of angle-riding and skillful manoeuvres. Whether it is cruise bikes, racing bikes or basic fuel-efficient city bikes, riding can be pure pleasure experience each time you sit on your saddle. Don’t feel bogged down by the pitiful conditions of our roads, it only makes you a better rider provided you implement few tricks of the trade. Here is a list of few helpful tips that can change your ride from awful to awesome.

1.  Find the right mechanic
You are only as good as your machine. Find a good mechanic who is passionate about biking and knows your bike very well. Your bike mechanic is like your doctor; a good mechanic should know the delicacy of your bike engine and tune it to perfection. Having a high calibre bike is of no use if the engine is not conditioned properly. There is a staggeringly large number of so-called mechanics but only a few are dextrous to fix your bike. Find them, befriend them and fine-tune your bike.

2. Get a grip of your rear tyre
Back tyres are crucial ingredient of any pleasure ride. If your back tyre is worn out or is in the process of wearing away then replace it. It is worth spending on a good tyre to make you feel secure in these roads that can be mercilessly slippery.

3. Eye gear is a must
Don’t use your spectacles or sunglasses while riding. Get a pair of decent riding glasses that you can use both during daytime and in the night. Riding glasses makes a lot of difference, if you see better, you have that extra few seconds to adjust your ride.

4. Spend in a jacket
Weather conditions in Nepal fluctuate a lot, it could be pouring or blazing heat or chilling cold. Get a waterproof jacket. Jacket is your armour as you head to the road that throws all kinds of obstructions at you. Plus you can always use your jacket even when you’re not riding.

5. Gloves and helmet
Helmet and gloves are essential items of your biking experience. Do not settle for helmets that are ill-fitting.  Find your fit and always tie your helmet belt when riding. Also get a pair of gloves. You can use a mountain biking gloves. They are very comfortable and airy.

6. Understand the mechanics of your bike’s gear
Gear is what makes biking special. Can you imagine a Royal Enfield that runs on automatic transmission engine! Understanding of gear comes with careful analysis of torque your bike generates which is indicated by your bike’s RPM meter.  This understanding is crucial as it has a logical functioning.  As a biker, learn which gear compliments your ride the most. Next, learn to modulate you acceleration in that gear. Most riders find the 3th gear ideal for comfy ride however it is up to the rider to find their own comfort zone. As your bike runs regularly on this comfortable modulation, it prepares the engine accordingly and makes the acceleration smooth. This learning could take time and little bit of attention but guarantees smooth-flowing biking experience.

7. Know your road
No matter how skilful rider you are, if you don’t pay attention to the road on which you are riding, your experience will be mediocre. Every time you are riding, remind yourself that it’s the road that matters the most. Conscious rider puts effort to analyse the road, this helps to direct the bike perfectly as the tyres align with the road levelling. This practice also helps to angle your bike in curbs and rough roads. Again, paying attention when you are riding is crucial to turn you into a skilled rider.

8. Traffic awareness
Every road we ride on has traffic on it. Remember that you are a commuter just like everybody else on the road. Just because you are skilled and have a better machine than others, doesn’t give you the right to ride carelessly. Respect the fellow commuters. When you respect others, automatically you will avoid accidents and dangerous manoeuvres.

9. Graceful riding
Keep in mind that people only appreciate graceful riding. You can have all the qualities of an amazing rider but if your riding doesn’t have grace then you are not a class rider. Leaning to be graceful is something that has to come from within. No one can teach you this but once you incorporate this skill you will be the best in the business.

10. Rash is crass
We see a lot of rough riding in Nepali road. Remember rash is crass and makes people watching it feel like trash.  Be sensitive to the feeling of others. Biking is an art just like any other art form and unless you become skilful you are not going to enjoy your ride. Speed is not skill; speed when not needed is being amateur.

We have lost countless youths to road rage. It is a pity that something so much fun is frowned upon by older generation as risqué and classless. It is time to restore much needed dignity and class back to riding. Biking is fun. Let’s make it even better. Nepal has the potential to turn into a country of great riders.
